Custom metal milling provides parts for OEM operations

Titletown Manufacturing offers custom metal milling and grinding services

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) often require a variety of specialized parts for their productions and operations. Custom metal milling and metal surface grinding services delivered by the expert team at Titletown Manufacturing play a significant role in the success of these companies.

We use vertical and horizontal machining centers to complete our custom metal milling operations. These precision machines efficiently take metal stock down to the dimensions and finishes needed for the specific part.

The difference between custom metal milling and metal surface grinding comes down to the degree of accuracy we can reasonably expect from those operations. Not every part requires the same level of precision, and we use both techniques when appropriate for ultimate accuracy.

Custom metal milling can be a preliminary step in finishing a part

Depending on the ultimate accuracy requirements for a specific part, our team may employ either or both machining techniques to arrive at the final product. Custom metal milling allows us to come within .0005 inches of spec, while metal surface grinding reduces that variance to within .0001 inches of spec.

We perform metal surface grinding operations to enhance the final output of a part that has gone through the custom metal milling stage. We can make it even flatter, more parallel, or achieve a better surface finish depending on our customer’s requirements.

Our Wisconsin-based team works in comfort inside our climate-controlled facility, using the best in equipment technology and quality control to complete a full range of services for machine assembly and parts production. Our OEM customers rely on us to provide high-quality services at every level of production, whether that is custom metal milling or through the metal surface grinding stage.

Metal surface grinding delivers specific finish characteristics

Titletown Manufacturing uses a variety of machines for high-quality parts

Metal surface grinding is a general term that refers to a variety of precision machining operations geared toward bringing different shapes of stock to desired dimensions and finishes. Titletown Manufacturing performs three primary metal surface grinding operations in producing parts for OEM machinery.

Outside diameter (OD) grinding – This version of metal surface grinding focuses on taking cylindrical stock down to a target diameter. Our experienced team performs OD grinding of rolls to within .0002 inches of spec, with finishes as fine as 8 Ra (roughness average). Our equipment can handle pieces as large as 95 inches in length and 16 inches in diameter.

Blanchard grinding – This type of metal surface grinding utilizes a 40-inch diameter table to hold flat plates of stock. This process is appropriate for larger pieces of material and removes stock from one side. Blanchard grinding leaves a recognizable mark on the surface with finishes of approximately 65 Ra. We use the Blanchard process to grind frames to parallel within five-thousandths of an inch.

Surface grinding – Typically used on smaller pieces, approximately 12 x 24 inches or less, this metal surface grinding technique also can achieve results within .0002 inches. Surface grinding usually is one of the final steps in machining a part.

OEMs depend on high-quality metal surface grinding

Titletown Manufacturing’s consistent investments in equipment enable our team to perform premium metal surface grinding in Green Bay that our OEM customers expect. This aspect of precision machining plays an important role in the production of frames and other large parts used in machine assembly.

In addition to providing equipment capable of delivering exceptional results, our Wisconsin workforce has now been utilizing the expanded workspace available in our Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, facility for more than a year. The spacious assembly bay gives us the ability to complete a wider array of assembly jobs in a safe, comfortable environment.

Titletown Manufacturing minimizes the number of subcontractors needed to deliver high-quality components and complete machines with consistent attention to quality control. Metal surface grinding is one of a full range of services Titletown Manufacturing can provide in-house.

Titletown Manufacturing expanding steel fabrication capabilities

Green Bay steel fabrication shop is investing in additional machinery

Titletown Manufacturing will be boosting its internal steel fabrication capabilities with continuing investments in additional machinery. A metal brake for precise bending and a plasma waterjet laser for enhanced cutting are the latest additions planned for our Green Bay, Wisconsin, facility.

These investments are indicative of our consistent efforts to upgrade our asset base while providing hands-on quality control and exceptional steel fabrication services. The addition of these tools will bring us closer to the one-stop shop our customers value in a steel fabrication service provider.

Bending and laser cutting will complement the welding and machining of final weldments that our team already performs. We are able to smooth out imperfections from final weldments for customers ranging from paper converters to food-grade stainless steel suppliers.

Steel fabrication relies on CNC boring bar, milling machines

The Titletown Manufacturing shop floor utilizes a variety of high-end steel fabrication machinery to produce parts as long as 200 inches in length. Our sweet spot for tight-tolerance, highly precision pieces is up to 100 inches in length.

Our CNC boring bar is a versatile piece of steel fabrication equipment that we use for both low-production as well as high-production parts runs. Its computer programming enables our team to deliver the tight tolerances on larger projects that typically are available only in smaller jobs.

The key to this tool’s performance is the ability to remove the guarding. This is what enables our team to work on pieces larger than is possible with enclosed vertical milling machines and horizontal milling machines. We can deliver multi-axis machining down to tolerances of .0001 of an inch.

Metal machining helps fabrication projects come to life

Experience, equipment give Titletown Manufacturing an advantage

Excellence in metal machining requires a combination of equipment capabilities and skill level of the shop’s machinists. Titletown Manufacturing is fortunate to have both assets in good supply in support of our commitment to produce high-quality orders for our customers.

Significant investments in equipment and software over the past few years has enhanced our ability to provide metal machining services for a wide range of products. Chief among those investments are a CNC boring bar, a horizontal milling machine, and a 5-axis vertical milling machine that enables us to machine large parts on its 80-inch x-axis and 27.5-inch y-axis. This unit performs multi-axis CNC metal machining within an impressive .0001 tolerance.

Parallel investments in Mastercam and MazaCAM programming software have helped us integrate all of our CNC assets for incredibly accurate metal machining. This combination of equipment and software lets us machine parts as small as one-quarter inch to 19 inches in diameter, and one-half inch to 80 inches in length.

Metal machining of stainless steel relies on correct tooling and welding

Machining stainless steel requires a higher level of expertise and specialized equipment than most other materials. Titletown Manufacturing has the appropriate tooling in stock for this type of metal machining, and our team is fluent in the practices specific to machining stainless steel.

The specialized tooling needed for stainless steel enhances our efficiency because we can run material feeds and machining speeds at much faster rates. The experience of our team is another major advantage for our customers. Having the correct equipment is of limited value without the machinists’ knowledge for high-level operations.

Glass blasting and welding ground flush to surfaces eliminates the crevices in which bacteria can live on food-grade stainless steel. Our team’s ability to make these surfaces smooth and free from imperfections is a valuable and necessary skill for our stainless steel customers.
